The mentoring relationship can be tracked back to the Greek Mythology in Homer’s epic tale, The Odyssey. When Odysseus left for the Trojan War, he asked a wise teacher known as Mentor to watch over his son. Odysseus recognized that Mentor showed great wisdom. Since Homer’s time, "mentor" has come to mean trusted adviser who guides by passing on wisdom, knowledge and experience.
In today’s world, the mentoring relationship is still thriving and has expanded to embrace every aspect of life. It has endured as a way for individuals and communities to transfer knowledge and maximize human potential.
"SIAST has been very pleased to have staff participatinng in Leadership Saskatoon for many years and I personally have been involved as a Mentor in the program since 2005. My experience in the mentorship component of the program has been very positive from all perspectives.
I have been very impressed with the candidates that I have worked with. It has been particularly gratifying to note the growth of the participants as the curriculum unfolds. Without exception I have also enjoyed the dialogue that has developed in our regular one-on-one meetings. Predictably, I have learned as much from the participants as they might have learned from me."
